• The current session has a capture region (banner may say it has none) — use ⌘⇧R.
• The region covers visible text; very similar content to the previous capture may be skipped (toast shows similarity).

Built-in (Apple) translation is the default and free. The first time you use a language pair, macOS may download language packs — keep the Mac online briefly. For DeepL or Zhipu AI (optional BYOK), open Preferences → Translation, enter a valid API key, and run Validate / Test Translation. If a BYOK engine is selected without a key, OCR still works but translation will not run. With Zhipu selected, multi-line OCR text may first be merged for soft line breaks before translation.

The free plan allows up to 20 successful new translations per session. Retranslating a card that already has a translation does not count. When the limit is reached, further new translations (and further captures in that session) show the Pro paywall. Upgrade to SnapLingua Pro for unlimited translations, or start a new session to continue on the free plan.

Yes. Deleted sessions and capture records appear under Recently Deleted in the library for 30 days. You can restore them, permanently delete individual items, or empty the trash. Items older than 30 days are removed automatically when the app launches. Vocabulary deletions are separate and are not kept in Recently Deleted.

Configurable source / target pairs include English, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese. Default is English → Chinese. The OCR recognition language follows your source language setting. App UI language can follow the system, or be set to English / 中文.

The main window has three columns: Library (All Sessions, Favorites, Vocabulary, Recently Deleted, plus your categories) · session or vocabulary list · detail. Create categories under Categories with “New Category”. Right-click a session to add/remove Favorites or Move to Category. Deleting a category only uncategorized its sessions — it does not delete sessions. Categories are free (no Pro gate). Open Vocabulary or Recently Deleted from the library row; there is no Sessions / Vocabulary segmented control in the middle column.

Words you have already added to Vocabulary are highlighted in the source text so you can spot them while reviewing. Select more text and use Add to Vocabulary from the context menu to grow the list.

Timeline Markdown is free. Outline Markdown and Anki TSV (session line pairs + vocabulary) share 10 free trial successful exports, then require Pro. Use Export in the toolbar or ⌘E. You can set a default export folder in Preferences → Recognition.

No. Screen capture and OCR run on your Mac. Built-in Apple Translation stays on-device. We do not operate content servers. Optional DeepL or Zhipu AI only receive text you choose to translate (and, for Zhipu, optional soft line-break merge), using your own API key. Pro iCloud sync stores data only in your private iCloud container — AlgoBear cannot read it.

Sync requires an active SnapLingua Pro entitlement and an iCloud account signed in on the Mac. Free users stay fully local. If Pro is active but sync does not start, confirm iCloud is available for the Mac, then reopen the app.
